Nagasaki, Japan, around 1900: Pinkerton, a lieutenant in the American Navy, has fallen in love with Cio-Cio-San, nicknamed "Butterfly." The wedding, held according to Japanese ritual, is nothing but a farce for him – and shortly thereafter, Pinkerton's "toy" is alone again with their son. Three years later, he returns to Japan, but not for Butterfly. He and his new wife want to take the child back to America. Butterfly takes her own life.
